Puppy
Pathways

Bridging the gap between buyers and ethical breeders through data-driven microlearning.

Prospective puppy buyers are overwhelmed by conflicting information. Ethical breeders answer the same questions on repeat. I surveyed 50+ breeders, analysed the data, and built a suite of interactive microlearning modules that help buyers make informed decisions, giving breeders a resource they can actually share.

Phase 1 · Problem Framing
Who owns the education gap?

Nobody does, and that's the problem. Buyers arrive at breeders with enthusiasm and misinformation; breeders answer the same questions on repeat with no shared resource to hand off. The gap lives in the space between them.

Buyers have read Reddit threads, watched YouTube, and arrived with fixed ideas about breed temperament, health testing, and what a "good breeder" looks like. For ethical breeders, this means hours of repetitive education per inquiry with no guarantee the buyer retains any of it.

Where does communication break down?
Buyer knowledgeBuyers conflate popular breeds with appropriate lifestyle matches, and rarely understand what "health tested" means for a specific breed.
Breeder burdenEthical breeders answer the same 10 questions every inquiry call. No shared, credible resource they can hand off.
Trust gapBuyers struggle to tell an ethical breeder from a backyard breeder. Price and wait time are mistaken for quality signals, in both directions.
Cost surprisePuppy price sticker shock is the #1 reason buyers end up at a puppy mill. Nobody has explained what the cost actually covers.
This isn't a buyer motivation problem. Buyers want to do the right thing. It's an information architecture problem: the right information doesn't exist in a form that reaches the right person at the right moment.
Phase 2 · Research & Discovery
What do breeders actually see?

Buyers who've done a lot of research and retained almost none of it. To surface this pattern, I designed and fielded a survey to 50+ ethical breeders through Facebook breeder and owner communities, asking what buyers consistently got wrong, what formats worked, and what they wished every buyer understood before making first contact.

A second breed-specific survey followed, gathering 126 responses (a 203% increase), capturing breed personality, environmental suitability, social needs, and exercise requirements.

Who are we designing for?
Both personas are stuck in the same loop: one exhausted by explaining it, one overwhelmed by not knowing it. A single, well-designed learning resource breaks that loop for both.

Phase 3 · Analysis
What did the data reveal?

Three things buyers consistently get wrong:

  • They misread price as a quality signal
  • They don't understand what health testing actually involves
  • They conflate social media aesthetics with breeding ethics

I surfaced these patterns by processing survey responses in Python, coding open-text answers thematically, and visualising misconceptions as a word cloud.

The breed-specific survey, 126 responses and a 203% lift over wave one, gave enough data to build scenario-based content grounded in real breed variability rather than generalised advice.

What misconceptions came up most often?
Health testing opacityMost buyers had never heard of OFA, PennHIP, or breed-specific genetic panels. "Health tested" read as vague marketing, not a verifiable commitment.
Price-as-signal confusionBuyers used price as the primary quality filter in both directions. High prices read as ethical; low prices as suspicious. Neither assumption was reliable.
Lifestyle-breed mismatchInstagram aesthetics drove breed interest, but buyers rarely mapped breed-specific energy, space, and social needs against their actual living situation.
Backyard breeder blindspotBuyers couldn't articulate the difference between a registered ethical breeder and a backyard breeder. Red flags were largely unknown.
The data revealed four overlapping information gaps each reinforcing the next. Fixing one in isolation wouldn't move the needle. The design needed to address all four in sequence.
Phase 4 · Design
How do you make a puppy buyer actually retain this?

You meet them where they already are: on their phone, mid-research, making a decision. I applied the SAM (Successive Approximation Model) iterative design process to build content buyers would actually finish. Analyse, prototype, evaluate, repeat.

I chose Rumie Bytes for three reasons: minimal setup barrier for buyers, easy sharing for breeders, and a mobile-first format aligned with where buyers actually browse. Each module is scenario-based, under ten minutes, and designed to answer one real question a buyer has when they're deep in the consideration phase.

Design principles
1
Ease of sharing
Content must be easy for breeders to share and for buyers to access without friction. A link is a tool; a login wall is a barrier.
2
Low barrier to entry
Rumie Bytes requires no download, no account, no setup. The learner starts immediately. This is non-negotiable for an audience that already has decision fatigue.
3
Clarity and conciseness
Short, digestible modules reduce cognitive load. Each Byte answers one question clearly and stops. It doesn't try to be a textbook.
4
Scenario-based learning
Real-world examples help learners understand and retain knowledge. "What should Emma ask at a breeder visit?" lands differently than "here is a checklist."
5
Engagement across touchpoints
Modules are embeddable on breeder websites and shareable via social. The learning happens wherever the buyer is in their research journey.
Phase 5 · The solution
Did four modules add up to one clear journey?

Yes, each module answers one real question in the order buyers actually ask them. Drawing on breeder survey data, persona insights, and Emma's buyer journey, I sequenced four Rumie Bytes modules to match the decision arc from first sticker shock all the way through to pickup day.

Each module is interactive, scenario-based, and shareable via a single link. Breeders can drop the relevant link into any inquiry response. Buyers can work through them in any order, or all four before making first contact.

Module 01
Why Puppies from Ethical Breeders Are Expensive
The most common buyer dropout point. Breaks down what that price actually covers: health testing, genetic screening, socialization, and vet care, so the number stops feeling arbitrary.

Module 02
Finding the Right Dog Breed for Your Lifestyle
Scenario-based breed-matching that helps buyers understand their own household before they fall in love with a breed that won't work for them.

Module 03
Why Health Testing Matters
Demystifies breed-specific health testing, explains what registries to check, and teaches buyers to ask the right questions rather than accept a certificate at face value.

Module 04
What to Expect from an Ethical Breeder
Walks through the full inquiry-to-pickup process so buyers know what a good experience looks like and what red flags to watch for at every stage.

Interactive prototype

I converted the first two modules into a Genially interactive demo to prototype a richer, multi-modal learning experience, exploring what a full Puppy Pathways product could look like beyond the Rumie platform.

The prototype worked. From October 2025 to June 2026, learners across all four modules grew by 40% and completions rose by 29%, validating that scenario-based, shareable microlearning reaches buyers at the moment they need it most.
Phase 6 · Impact
Did the modules actually land?

Yes. Completions grew, learners multiplied, and an unsolicited citation from an industry podcast confirmed the gap was real. Engagement data across all four modules validated the format: buyers finish content when it is short, scenario-based, and directly relevant to a decision they are actively making.

Key Takeaways
What this project demonstrated about research, education design, and executing independently from zero.
1
Survey data is more than content: it's sequence
The Python analysis didn't just confirm what breeders wanted to teach. It revealed the order in which buyers need to learn it. Cost before credibility. Process after trust. Data-informed sequencing is why these modules work, not just what's in them.
2
Platform constraints are design constraints: use them
Rumie's mobile-first, no-login format initially felt limiting. It turned out to be the right constraint: it forced short modules, clear scenario framing, and zero friction for the exact audience (buyers on their phones at 11pm doing research).
3
Real-world validation matters more than internal confidence
Laura Reeves of Pure Dog Talk provided feedback during the module design process and later wrote about the results on her blog. That signal, from someone with genuine standing in the ethical breeding community, is qualitative validation that no internal review can replicate.
4
Community outreach is lean UX research
Recruiting through Facebook breeder groups to test Rumie Bytes wasn't just a scrappy distribution hack: it was a feedback channel. The comments, shares, and completion patterns from that audience directly informed iteration. Outreach and research are the same activity when you design it right.
